Candle mat

The hexagon flowers were looking at me, and I thought they could be made into something.  I decided on a candle mat, although, it could be used as for a mug.
It was quite easy to do.  The hexagon was machine stitched to some red fabric which was trimmed.  I've used a thin batting which gives it some stability, and once the whole thing was turned right way out, I did a line of stitching close to the outside edge.

I then stitched in the ditch around the central hexagon, and around the outside of the flower.  A quick and satisfying project.

After it was done, I sorted some more scraps and had enough for one more flower.

I think this is the last of the red projects for January's Rainbow scrap challenge.

I don't know if you've seen this months craft magazines, but one of them has a hexie pincushion (possibly Making). I saw it and thought of you.

Lovely mat!

What project would you recommend for beginning teen quilters (4H project)?

Cute candle mat or mug rug or whatever you want to use it for, I like it. I also like the little steaming cup fabric. I think I'll pull some of my hexagon flowers out and do one just like this one. I'm going to be a copy cat! have fun working on green this weekend!

That is really neat! I never thought of having a candle mat, but it makes sense, given the number of cloths I've wrecked over the years with melted candle wax:-(
