I did it

I sat down with my magazine, yarn and crochet hook and made this: It's amazing when something is new, how you get excited at the little things. Not only was I amazed that I could actually follow a pattern and it turn into something resembling the picture, but I now know how to make things with flat bottoms with sides going up.

Stitches used were chain, double crochet and half treble. It is finished off with a picot edging.
I should have crocheted the cord, but I couldn't get it to stay neat, so I thought a ribbon would do very nicely, thank you.

I have already bought the yarn for the next project. I think this one will take more than a day to complete though.

J has asked me to make him a little pouch in black and D wants me to teach him to crochet. Hang on boys, mum's still learning here.

Very nice.

My mother is here, and whenever she arrives my girls pull out their knitting bags and do their usual free-form knitting. But this time, my mom taught them the basic chain crochet stitch. They've been making long "scarves" ever since.

Great job! I'm going to take a class in crochet in the fall. Unlike knitting, I just can't seem to teach myself. Not enough needles.

You can do the flat bottom thing with knitting too. You'd have to use double points or a small circ. Join and knit to the diameter you want, then do a purl row for a fold. Continue to knit in the round. I do this to measure for a wine bottle then use the sack I knit as a gift bag. If it's for someone special, I clip wine glass charms all over the sack.

I saw a felted item like this used to store knitting needles. Clever, clever, clever.

Congratulations, you did it! Using the same technique you can crochet around a bottle and make a doll of it. It is not hard at all and nice to do.
