The pieces were ironed onto the backing fabric using bondaweb and then appliqued using blanket stitch using two strands of Madeira embroidery cotton. After the first couple of pieces, I got into a rhythm and the stitches got more even.
Next the tails were stitched in stem stitch using six strands. This gives the tails some thickness.
The exciting bit was the faces. The nose and eyes are done in satin stitch using three strands, and then the mouths were stitched in stem stitch.
I know I could have machine appliqued this, but it was so much more satisfying doing this by hand. Now after a gentle wash and an iron, I need to make it into a quilt.
