Needlepoint Sampler

I have always enjoyed needlepoint when I have done it, but haven't always had the confidence to do anything with it.  I thought going back to basics might help to get more adventurous.  When I saw Janet Perry was offering a free beginners needlepoint lessons, I signed up.  These stitches form the basis of a sampler.  I have done them in a different format and once I have done a border, I will make this into a bell pull

I stitched the sampler using Anchor Perle No 5, colour number 341.  The stitches used are diagonal gobelin, skip tent stitch, diagonal mosaic, mosaic, cashmere, straight gobelin, hungarian, rice, and smyrna cross stitch.

This has been a good exercise to see the different effects each stitch gives, and makes it easier to understand why stichers choose the stitches they do.  I am almost inspired to dig out my needlepoint book and try some of the projects to have some fun using a variety of stitches.

I needlepointed up a storm in the 70's (yikes! that was a long time ago). I switched to x-stitch when it took over in popularity and the supplies were easier to find. But it's a lot of fun and your sampler will will be a good guide.

A great idea to try all stitches and see what you like the best. Never have done needlepoint.
